Genesis 17:3-9/Jn 8:51-59
In today’s first reading which comes from the book of Genesis chapter 17 verses 3-9, God makes
a covenant with Abraham. The covenant was the promise that Abraham would be the father of
nations. God promised that he would keep this covenant with Abraham’s descendants. Even the
responsorial Psalm talks about God keeping his covenant with his people. God keeping his
covenant with Abraham and his descendants shows that God keeps his word always. Even
though Abraham’s descendants were not always loyal to God. In today's Gospel from John
chapter 8 verses 51-59, Jesus is telling the Jews that whoever keeps his word will never see
death. The Jews questioned him on his words and on who he claims himself to be. Jesus tells the
Jews that if he glorifies himself then his glory is nothing. In the Gospel, the Jews are constantly
questioning him. While it is okay to question, however, they doubted Christ’s words. In today’s
time, people find themselves questioning God. Today, more and more people are losing their
faith and for those people, it is important for them to just know that God will be waiting for them
to return. This is a path that can be overcome through the grace of God even if you don’t believe
it can. Just remember that you are not alone in this journey, you have your family, your friends,
and especially you have God no matter the condition, whether you feel him or not. To those who
have stopped believing God, remember there are people who will always have your back. I leave
you with this verse “If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.”
